The Supreme Court heard the RG Kar College incident on August 20 after taking suo motu cognizance. The court had ordered the Bengali government and the CBI to provide the court with a status update on their investigations into the incident during this hearing.

The Supreme Court has heard a status report regarding the rape and murder of a female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The CBI claims in the report that there was tampering at the crime scene in the RG Kar Medical College case in Kolkata. A complete cover-up of the case was attempted. The FIR that was filed following the burial was another matter that the CBI questioned. The Supreme Court heard the RG Kar College incident on August 20 after taking suo motu cognizance. The Bengal government’s legal staff includes 21 lawyers.

During the Supreme Court hearing, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud expressed unhappiness with the delay in securing the crime scene. During the hearing, the Chief Justice stated that information in the unnatural death case was provided at 10:10 a.m., while the crime scene was secured around 11:45 a.m. This is an extremely disturbing fact. According to media sources, the legal team supporting the Bengal government in the RG Kar Medical College issue before the Supreme Court consists of 21 lawyers. Similarly, the Central Government’s legal staff consists of five lawyers.

The Supreme Court mandated the formation of a National Task Force for the safety of doctors and voiced grave concerns regarding the event at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College during the hearing on Tuesday. Serious concerns were also brought up by the court regarding the Bengali police and government. The Bengal Police was also chastised by the Supreme Court for their failure to maintain the security of the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College.

The Supreme Court also questioned the working methods of Sandip Ghosh, the previous principal of RG Kar Medical College, and why the Principal failed to file a formal complaint (FIR) even after several hours had elapsed. The deceased’s family members had to wait many hours to see her dead body, which infuriated the Supreme Court as well. A woman physician who had been sexually assaulted at RG Kar Medical College was recently brutally murdered. Medical professionals and students nationwide are demonstrating against this. Protests against this incident are also being organized by the Indian Medical Association and FORDA, an association of resident physicians.
