The mango season has arrived. Several sellers artificially ripen mangoes during this time to sell them on the market. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been alerted in this case. The use of calcium carbide to artificially ripen fruits has been prohibited by the FSSAI. Also, FSSAI informed food business operators (FBOs), traders, and fruit handlers who operate ripening rooms.
The FSSAI has directed that state and UT food safety departments remain surveillance. In addition, the FSSAI has given its approval to prosecute those performing illegal activities. The FSSAI urged that officials deal with such people firmly and take appropriate action against them in accordance with the provisions of the FSS Act, 2006 and the rules and regulations adopted thereunder.
