The Supreme Court on Thursday criticized the Punjab government for allegedly creating a narrative in the media that efforts are being made to end the hunger strike of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The court clarified that it had never directed the state government to forcefully terminate Dallewal’s hunger strike and expressed concern only for his health.

Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since November 26, demanding that the central government invite farmers for dialogue. Amid deteriorating health conditions, the Supreme Court has now extended the deadline for providing medical assistance and hospitalizing Dallewal to January 6, 2025.

Supreme Court Rebukes Punjab Government

During the hearing, the apex court reprimanded the Punjab government, stating, “Officials of the Punjab government are attempting to create a media narrative suggesting that efforts are being made to end Dallewal’s hunger strike. We have not issued any such directive. Our sole concern is for his health and well-being.”

The court also issued a notice to the central government, seeking its response on the matter.

Deadline Extended to January 6

Previously, the court had directed the Punjab government to provide immediate medical assistance to Dallewal and admit him to a hospital by a set deadline. However, the state failed to meet this deadline, citing the potential risk of escalating tensions if force was used. The Supreme Court has now extended the deadline to January 6, emphasizing the importance of providing necessary medical care without breaking Dallewal’s hunger strike.

Punjab Government’s Stand

The Punjab government assured the court that they are making every effort to provide medical assistance to Dallewal without using force. “We do not want to escalate the situation by taking coercive measures,” the government stated.

Supreme Court’s Directive to Chief Secretary

The Supreme Court has directed the Punjab government’s Chief Secretary to file an affidavit by Monday, detailing the steps taken to comply with its orders. The court also expressed displeasure over the irresponsible statements made by government officials and farmer leaders, which, it said, were complicating the situation further.

Background of the Hunger Strike

Jagjit Singh Dallewal began his indefinite hunger strike on November 26, demanding that the central government initiate talks with farmers. Despite the Supreme Court’s order to provide medical care, Dallewal has refused to end his hunger strike until his demands are met.

The Punjab government’s failure to comply with the court’s initial directive to hospitalize Dallewal has drawn criticism, with the state citing concerns over potential unrest if force is used.

Conclusion

As Dallewal’s health continues to deteriorate, the Supreme Court has reiterated the importance of medical intervention without coercion. The central government has also been called upon to respond to the situation. The extended deadline of January 6 provides a window for all parties to work toward a resolution, while the court continues to monitor the developments closely.

This case underscores the delicate balance between addressing public health concerns and respecting individual rights, particularly in situations involving sensitive socio-political issues.
