Debabrata Saikia, the head of the opposition and a member of the Congress, filed a complaint at the Nazira Police Station in Sivasagar district on Wednesday night alleging that the Assam Chief Minister urged burning 10, Janpath in his speech on September 19 in MP.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, was accused of making a “hate speech” at a rally earlier this week in Madhya Pradesh, according to a complaint made by the Congress on Wednesday.

Debabrata Saikia, the head of the opposition and a congressman, filed a complaint at the Nazira Police Station in Sivasagar district on Wednesday night alleging that the Assam chief minister had recommended burning down 10 Janpath in a speech on September 19 in MP.

Sonia Gandhi, a former president of the Congress, resides at 10 Janpath.

“Sarma has openly advocated for setting Sonia Gandhi’s home at 10 Janpath, where she formerly served as the president of the Indian National Congress, on fire. The widow of the former prime minister, who is 77 years old, was the target of Sarma’s attempt to provoke an attack, according to Saikia.

The complaint stated, “I am required to file this FIR (first information report) in response to Sri Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, making a vulgar and insulting remark on September 19, 2023, at the Jan Ashirwad rally in Vidhisha district, Madhya Pradesh.

“Sri Sarma has elevated election rhetoric to its most repulsive level in a nation where the rule of law is upheld. Sri Sarma specifically advised that 10, Janpath should be set on fire while making fun of Sri Kamal Nath, a famous member of the Indian National Congress, for being a Hindu, the suit states.

He claimed that reckless words coming from a constitutional figure like the chief minister could incite the wrong people to use violence and hurt the citizens of Janpath 10.

Legal action should be taken against Himanta Biswa Sarma, according to Saikia. “This is a clear instigation towards rioting and abetment of arson on his part,” Saikia added.

He claims that the Assam Chief Minister might be charged for violating the Indian Penal Code’s (IPC) sections 153 (provocation), 115 (abetting an offense), and 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to demolish a house).

Saikia posted a copy of the complaint and stated that the chief minister should be ashamed for using hate speech and encouraging violence. X (previously Twitter) is a microblogging platform.

“Even though the claim was made in Madhya Pradesh, it has received widespread distribution through Assamese-accessible print, electronic, and social media. As a result, I beg you to file a FIR and take the appropriate steps, Saikia wrote in this complaint.

The Sivasagar Police have reportedly received the complaint, but no FIR has been lodged, according to the officials with knowledge of the situation.

Subhrajyoti Borah, the Sivasagar district’s superintendent of police, was contacted by HT, but he didn’t return the calls.
