3 August 2023 ( New Delhi): India said on Thursday it would impose a license requirement for the import of laptops, tablets and personal computers with immediate effect, a move that could hit companies such as Apple, Dell and Samsung and force them to do so. Promote local manufacturing. The government has ‘curbed’ the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra small form factor (USFF) computers and servers. The import curb is in force with immediate effect. Restricting the import of a product means that a license or government permission is mandatory for their import.
Simply put, now China-made electronic goods will not be available in India. The government has taken this decision to increase manufacturing of these items in India and reduce imports from China.The government has taken several steps to encourage domestic manufacturing of electronics goods.India has imported personal computers including laptops worth $5.33 billion in 2022-23. In 2021-22, this figure was $ 7.37 billion.
