On Monday, the opposition members’ determined protests rocked the Parliament for the third day in one day.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the monsoon session, and a number of opposition leaders demonstrated outside the Parliament overnight in protest. They also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi start a debate on Manipur in the House.
According to Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale, the I.N.D.I.A. leaders took turns with a team sitting through the night next to the Gandhi statue during the protest, which started on Monday AM and will continue on Tuesday.
“We MPs from Team INDIA took turns sitting in solidarity with @AamAadmiParty MP @SanjayAzadSln throughout the night after he was shockingly & unfairly suspended simply for asking PM Modi to discuss Manipur in Parliament.” “We all stand together in ensuring justice for Manipur, and we will continue to demand that PM Modi feels nothing of shame and speaks out about the horrific events happening in Manipur under his party’s govt,” he wrote on Twitter.
“We’ve been here since yesterday. Our sole demand is that Prime Minister Modi address the Manipur issue. “We will continue to protest here, and I am still requesting that Prime Minister Modi come to Parliament and speak about Manipur,” Sanjay Singh.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh’s suspension
On Monday, the AAP MP was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the Monsoon session for repeatedly “violating” the chair’s directions. Singh was suspended after House Leader Piyush Goyal presented a motion in this regard, which was approved by voice vote.
Singh claimed to be “repeatedly requesting the Chair (Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar) for discussion on Manipur violence and demanding that the Prime Minister come to the House and give a reply.”
“When the Chair didn’t listen to me, I went closer to him to request that he allow me to speak under Rule 267, for which I had given notice,” he explained.
Parliament congestion
For the third day in a row, a massive commotion rocked Parliament on Monday, with opposition MPs pressing on a response from PM Modi on the Manipur issue before any debate. In the midst of this, federal home minister Amit Shah stated in a brief remark in the Lok Sabha on Monday that he is “prepared for a debate on the violence in Manipur” and encouraged Opposition leaders to enable a debate on the subject.
“I am prepared for a debate in the House.” I’m not sure why the opposition refuses to allow a debate. It is my request to the opposition leaders to allow a dialogue on this critical issue and to present the truth to the people. “It’s critical,” he remarked.
Manipur crisis
After a video from May 4 leaked showing two women from one of the state’s warring clans being paraded naked by a mob of men, there were severe tensions in Manipur last week. So far, seven people have been detained by the Manipur police in relation to the event.
