In a devastating display of nature\u2019s fury, Himachal Pradesh witnessed 17 cloudbursts in a single night<\/strong>, claiming at least 18 lives<\/strong> and leaving 34 people missing<\/strong>. Torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides triggered large-scale destruction across multiple districts, with Mandi district worst affected<\/strong>, where 16 people died<\/strong> and dozens of homes were destroyed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to state disaster management officials, 332 people were rescued<\/strong> from various affected areas as rivers, including the Beas, swelled dangerously and entered residential zones. Over 24 homes and 12 cow shelters were flattened<\/strong> in Mandi alone. The Pattikari hydroelectric project<\/strong> near Kuklah was completely washed away, and over 30 cattle perished<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Widespread Impact Across Districts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In Thunag subdivision<\/strong>, a cloudburst in Kuklah village swept away eight houses and 24 people<\/strong>. By Tuesday evening, nine bodies had been recovered<\/strong>, while 21 remained missing<\/strong>. Similarly, in Syanj (Gohar subdivision)<\/strong>, two houses were swept away, leaving nine people missing<\/strong> and two bodies recovered<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Bara<\/strong>, a house collapse resulted in six people being trapped; four were rescued, and two bodies retrieved<\/strong>. In Parwara<\/strong>, a house was swept away, with two family members missing<\/strong> and one confirmed dead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karsog region<\/strong> saw multiple incidents. At Negli Bridge, four people went missing<\/strong> after a cloudburst; one body has been found. In Rikki and Kutti Nala, rescue operations led by NDRF<\/strong> safely evacuated several people stranded near rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Destruction of Infrastructure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The impact extended to transport and power infrastructure<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • 406 roads are currently blocked<\/strong>, with Mandi accounting for 248<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 171 water supply schemes<\/strong> have stopped functioning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 1,515 power transformers<\/strong> have been damaged, leading to blackouts<\/strong> across many areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    In Kullu\u2019s Aani Behnal<\/strong>, a cloudburst over the Karsha stream caused the complete closure of the national highway<\/strong>. In Kinnaur\u2019s Khrogla (Sangla Tehsil)<\/strong>, similar events occurred. A youth died in a fog-related accident<\/strong> in Chamba, and in Kangra, a woman’s body was recovered near an under-construction bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Schools Shut, Flights Canceled<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Due to the extreme weather, schools were closed in Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra<\/strong> districts. Flight operations were disrupted in Kangra and Kullu:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Four flights to Kangra were canceled<\/strong>, including Indigo flights from Delhi and Chandigarh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Only one flight from Delhi managed to land at Gaggal airport.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Air services to Bhuntar Airport were completely suspended<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Rescue Operations and Alerts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The NDRF and local authorities<\/strong> continue to conduct massive rescue and search operations. Affected people have been shifted to safer locations across Mandi, Karsog, and Hamirpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In Sujanpur (Hamirpur district)<\/strong>, 51 people stranded due to rising Beas water levels were rescued after a 5-hour operation. Several national highways and link roads remain inaccessible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Heavy Rainfall Alerts Continue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The India Meteorological Department (IMD)<\/strong> has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall for four days<\/strong> and a yellow alert for two days<\/strong> across various districts. The regions under immediate threat of floods include Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Solan, Sirmaur, and Shimla<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Economic Losses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu<\/strong> stated that preliminary assessments show damage worth \u20b9500 crore<\/strong> due to the cloudbursts on Monday night alone. Between June 20 and July 1<\/strong>, the state recorded total losses of \u20b9356.67 crore<\/strong> (\u20b935,667.24 lakh). Assessment is ongoing, with more data being collected from the PWD, Jal Shakti, and HPSEB<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
