New Delhi: On Tuesday, AAP president Arvind Kejriwal accused BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar of “cheating in broad daylight” for winning the Chandigarh mayoral race. In his initial response to the development, he stated that if the BJP could “stoop so low” in mayoral elections, it can go to any length to win the Lok Sabha polls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The manner in which cheating occurred in broad sight during the Chandigarh Mayor elections is quite concerning. If these folks can sink so low in a mayor’s race, they can go to any length in the national elections. This is quite disturbing,” Kejriwal commented on X in Hindi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Chandigarh’s mayoral elections on Tuesday, BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar defeated AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AAP and the Congress had contested the election together. The AAP-Congress coalition received more votes in the 35-member assembly than the BJP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chandigarh mayoral election was initially set on January 18. However, they have been postponed indefinitely due to the presiding officer’s illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed that the election be held on January 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BJP chief JP Nadda congratulated the party’s Punjab branch on its victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Congratulations to the BJP Chandigarh Unit on winning the Mayoral election. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, UTs have grown at an unprecedented pace. “The fact that the INDI Alliance lost their first electoral battle to the BJP demonstrates that neither their arithmetic nor their chemistry are working,” he wrote on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What came about in the Chandigarh mayoral election ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manoj Sonkar received 16 votes, while Kumar got 12. Eight votes were deemed invalid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Councillors from INDIA bloc parties AAP and Congress protested as soon as the results were announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly elected mayor will now conduct elections for the positions of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. The Congress has fielded candidates for these two positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BJP has 14 councillors in Chandigarh’s 35-member Municipal Corporation. The Congress has seven councillors, while the AAP has 13. The Shiromani Akali Dal has a single councillor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
