Celebrated Indian wrestler and Congress MLA from Julana, Vinesh Phogat, has welcomed a baby boy. The delivery took place at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, and both the mother and newborn are healthy, her family confirmed. Congratulations and warm wishes have been pouring in from across the country.
Vinesh was admitted to the hospital on Monday evening, and the delivery took place shortly after. This marks a joyful new chapter for the international wrestler, who had announced her pregnancy publicly in March 2025.
Social Media Announcement and Support from Family
On March 6, 2025, Vinesh had shared the news of her pregnancy via social media, posting a heartwarming photo with her husband Somveer Rathi, captioned: “Our love story continues with a new chapter.” The post included baby footprints and a love symbol, delighting her fans and followers.
Vinesh’s father-in-law Rajpal Rathi confirmed the birth and expressed happiness over the arrival of the family’s new member. Somveer and Vinesh’s love story began during their tenure with Indian Railways. Though initially not in close contact, their bond grew stronger over time. Somveer, a two-time national wrestling champion, proposed to Vinesh in 2018 at the Indira Gandhi International Airport following her gold medal win at the Asian Games in Jakarta. The couple got married the same year, on 14 December 2018, in a unique ceremony that included an eighth wedding vow focused on “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Beti Khilao”.
Vinesh’s Political Journey
After her active wrestling career, Vinesh ventured into politics. She joined the Indian National Congress in 2024 along with fellow wrestler Bajrang Punia, after meetings with former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress party fielded her from the Julana constituency in Jind district during the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections. Vinesh defeated BJP candidate Captain Yogesh Bairagi by a margin of 6,015 votes, securing 65,080 votes, while Bairagi received 59,065 votes. Her victory was celebrated with a massive roadshow from Delhi Airport to her native village Balali.
