The eighth edition of the bilateral military exercise SHAKTI-VIII between India and France is not just a display of combat readiness but a powerful symbol of deepening strategic trust and operational synergy between the two nations. Held in the southern region of France at Camp La Courtine, near La Cavalerie, this joint military exercise is a crucial milestone in bolstering interoperability and showcasing mutual commitment to global security.
Indian and French Armies Demonstrate Seamless Coordination
The Indian Army is being represented by approximately 90 soldiers from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles Battalion, while the French Army is fielding its renowned 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion (13e DBLE). The exercise aims to refine joint operational capabilities and develop best practices for high-intensity combat operations in complex terrains.
Urban Warfare, Patrolling, and Tactical Drills
Conducted in urban and semi-developed environments, SHAKTI-VIII includes extensive drills such as urban warfare simulations, obstacle breaching, coordinated patrolling, and rapid troop deployment. These drills mirror real-time combat conditions, enhancing the strategic agility, reaction time, and decision-making abilities of participating troops.
Focus on Electronic Warfare and Counter-Drone Training
A key highlight of the exercise is its emphasis on electronic warfare and counter-drone tactics. Specialized teams trained in intercepting and jamming radio signals, managing electromagnetic spectrum control, and neutralizing hostile drones participated in multiple field simulations. These advanced combat modules equip both forces to handle evolving threats on the modern battlefield.
96-Hour High-Intensity Field Operation
The most intense segment of SHAKTI-VIII was a 96-hour continuous joint field operation that tested endurance, leadership, and multi-domain coordination. Soldiers from both countries engaged in integrated battle scenarios, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and the ability to operate under high-pressure conditions across day and night cycles.
Boost in Morale from Indian Ambassador
India’s Ambassador to France and Monaco, Sanjeev Singla, visited the exercise site to interact with the Indian contingent. Commending the soldiers for their discipline and professionalism, he acknowledged their pivotal role in strengthening Indo-French defence relations. His visit significantly boosted the morale of the troops on the ground.

SHAKTI-VIII underscores the growing defence collaboration between India and France.
