New Delhi, India – February 17, 2025: In response to the increasing number of passengers traveling to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh, Indian Railways has taken a significant decision to streamline travel arrangements. Platform number 16 at New Delhi Railway Station has been exclusively designated for special trains departing for Prayagraj, ensuring better crowd management and smoother passenger movement.

Why Platform 16 Was Chosen?

The decision to use platform 16 exclusively for Kumbh-bound passengers comes after a chaotic situation erupted at the railway station on Saturday night due to excessive crowds. To prevent future incidents, authorities have made substantial changes in station entry, exit, and platform management. According to railway sources, Platform 16 was chosen due to its proximity to the metro station and its convenient access for bus travelers, making it the most efficient departure point for large groups of pilgrims.

Previously, special trains for Prayagraj departed from various platforms across the station, causing congestion and confusion among passengers. By centralizing all Maha Kumbh special train departures at Platform 16, the railway authorities aim to reduce unnecessary movement across platforms and enhance safety measures.

Revised Entry and Exit Rules

To ensure smooth operations, Indian Railways has implemented new rules for station entry and exit:

  • Passengers traveling to Prayagraj on special trains must use the Ajmeri Gate side for station entry and exit.
  • Entry from Paharganj will not be allowed for these passengers. Those who mistakenly arrive at Paharganj will have to make their way to Ajmeri Gate to access Platform 16.
  • Passengers traveling to Prayagraj on regular trains with confirmed tickets can continue to use both Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate for entry and exit.

Special Arrangements for Maha Kumbh Travelers

To accommodate the influx of pilgrims, Indian Railways has introduced several additional measures at New Delhi Railway Station:

  • Increased deployment of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel to guide passengers and ensure security.
  • Dedicated help desks, inquiry counters, and automated ticket vending machines to assist travelers.
  • Enhanced food, water, and sanitation facilities at Platform 16.
  • Organized queuing systems for passengers boarding general compartments to prevent overcrowding.
  • Special entry points will be created to facilitate the smooth movement of general-class passengers.

Multiple Special Trains to Manage Passenger Load

On Sunday, four special trains departed from New Delhi to Prayagraj, while on Monday, five more special trains will be dispatched. Returning trains from Prayagraj will be stationed at platforms with lesser congestion to ensure efficient deboarding.

Security and Passenger Advisory

Security measures have been heightened at the station, with strict screening at platform entry points. Authorities have urged passengers to arrive at least one hour before departure to avoid last-minute rush. The railway department has also advised passengers to rely on official railway helplines and not fall for misinformation. Travelers can call helpline number 139 for real-time assistance and updates regarding Maha Kumbh special trains.

Conclusion

With these dedicated arrangements, Indian Railways aims to facilitate a seamless and secure travel experience for millions of pilgrims heading to Maha Kumbh. The decision to centralize all Prayagraj-bound special trains at Platform 16 is expected to significantly reduce crowding and improve station management. As the grand event approaches, authorities remain committed to ensuring safe and efficient transportation for devotees and other passengers alike.
