Varanasi, India – A state of panic unfolded at the Manmandir Ghat in Varanasi on Friday after a large boat collided with a smaller one, causing it to capsize in the Ganges River. The incident led to an immediate rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and water police, ensuring the safety of all passengers on board.

The Incident
The city of Varanasi is currently witnessing an overwhelming influx of devotees due to the spiritual fervor surrounding the Mahakumbh pilgrimage. As thousands flock to the ghats to partake in religious rituals, the river traffic has significantly increased. On Friday, amid this rush, a large passenger boat carrying 58 people collided with a smaller boat, which had six passengers aboard.
The impact of the collision caused the smaller boat to overturn, throwing its passengers into the river. Chaos ensued as people on the ghats and other boats began shouting for help. Within moments, a swift rescue operation was launched by the NDRF, the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) flood relief team, and the local water police.

Rescue Operation & Casualties
Fortunately, all six passengers of the capsized boat were rescued safely. Two of them sustained minor injuries and were immediately taken to the district hospital for medical attention. According to Dr. S. Channappa, Additional Police Commissioner (Law and Order), the prompt response by the rescue teams averted a potential tragedy.
Legal Action & Investigation
Authorities have confirmed that a case will be registered against both boat operators for negligence. “The increasing number of boats and their unregulated movement pose serious safety risks, especially during peak pilgrimage seasons. We will take strict action to ensure such incidents do not recur,” said Dr. Channappa.

Safety Measures & Precautions
Given the rising number of devotees and tourists in Varanasi, the administration has urged boat operators to adhere to strict safety protocols. Officials are now considering additional measures such as:
- Mandatory life jackets for all passengers
- Strict monitoring of boat movements
- Limitations on the number of passengers per boat
- Increased patrolling by water police
With the Mahakumbh season in full swing, authorities are on high alert to prevent further incidents. Pilgrims and tourists are advised to follow safety guidelines while enjoying boat rides on the Ganges.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the need for stringent safety measures on the bustling waters of Varanasi. While Friday’s mishap did not result in any casualties, it underscores the importance of regulation and vigilance in ensuring the safety of devotees and tourists alike.
