Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh – Farmers in Noida have intensified their protests, demanding fair compensation, population plots, and the implementation of a new land acquisition law. These demands, which have been brewing for a long time, have led to significant disruptions, including heavy traffic snarls on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.
Key Demands of the Farmers
Farmers are pressing for three primary demands:
- 10% population plots: Allotment of land to affected families.
- 64.7% increased compensation: For land acquired by authorities.
- Implementation of the new land acquisition law: To safeguard farmer rights.
Escalation in Protests
Earlier this week, tensions heightened when police detained 123 farmer leaders and sent them to Luksar Jail. The detentions were made despite prior assurances from senior officials allowing farmers to continue their week-long sit-in at the Dalit Prerna Sthal.
Angered by the detentions, farmers called for a Mahapanchayat at Greater Noida’s Zero Point on Wednesday. Hundreds of farmers attended the gathering, demanding the immediate release of their leaders. Following further discussions with senior authorities, the detained leaders were released late Wednesday evening.
However, the situation remains volatile, with farmer organizations accusing the administration of attempting to suppress their voices.
Protest Timeline
- November 25: Farmers began their agitation under the banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM).
- December 2: Protestors staged sit-ins outside the Greater Noida Authority and Yamuna Expressway Authority offices.
- December 4: Thousands of farmers marched toward Delhi, only to be stopped by the Noida Police at the Dalit Prerna Sthal.
Zero Point Protests Continue
On Thursday, 34 farmer leaders participating in the sit-in at Zero Point were detained and sent to Luksar Jail. Additionally, 43 protesters from other parts of the district were also taken into custody. The arrests have escalated tensions between farmer groups and the administration.
Upcoming Plans
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has announced plans to intensify the protests. On Friday, December 6, hundreds of farmers are expected to assemble at Zero Point before marching toward Delhi.
“Instead of addressing our concerns, the administration is trying to silence us. This will only strengthen our resolve. After the release of our leaders, the movement will gain further momentum,” said a spokesperson for the protesting farmers.
Traffic Disruptions
The protests have caused massive traffic jams on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, disrupting the daily commute of thousands. Authorities have issued advisories, urging commuters to use alternate routes.
Police and Administrative Response
The police remain on high alert to manage the escalating situation. Officials stated that while peaceful protests are allowed, any attempt to disrupt law and order will be dealt with firmly.
Conclusion
With both sides refusing to back down, the situation in Noida remains tense. Farmers have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met, while the administration struggles to maintain order. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the standoff can be resolved amicably or escalates further.
