As preparations ramp up for the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, authorities are implementing stringent security measures to ensure the safety of millions of expected attendees. With a projected turnout of over 45 crore pilgrims, nearly double the 25 crore from the last Kumbh, these measures aim to address rising security concerns amid geopolitical tensions and increasing anti-India activities globally.
Unprecedented Entry Checks
One of the most significant decisions made by the authorities is the enforcement of mandatory security checks at all entry points into Prayagraj. No individual, vehicle, or goods will be allowed entry without undergoing thorough screening. This move is a proactive response to intelligence reports highlighting potential security threats linked to the current global climate.
ADG Zone Prayagraj, Bhanu Bhaskar, presided over a recent meeting with various law enforcement agencies, including local police, Railway Police, and district officials, to discuss these security protocols. The focus will be on high-risk areas, particularly in districts surrounding Prayagraj, Varanasi, Kanpur, and Lucknow.
Advanced Screening Technologies
To enhance security, authorities plan to utilize advanced technological tools for checks and frisking. Each vehicle entering Prayagraj will be subjected to rigorous monitoring, with extensive patrolling in place to deter potential threats. The installation of CCTV cameras at all security checkpoints is set to commence in October, creating a comprehensive surveillance network that will help maintain safety throughout the event.
Special Arrangements for VIPs
Given the prominence of the Kumbh Mela as a global religious gathering, special security arrangements will be made for visiting dignitaries and celebrities. SSP Rajesh Dwivedi outlined a robust security plan that includes a multi-tiered approach covering land, water, and aerial surveillance.
- Deployment of Elite Forces: The security setup will feature the deployment of NSG commandos, snipers, and specialized units from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Special Task Force (STF). These forces will be strategically positioned throughout the Mela area, including at key locations such as temples and the Sangam (the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers).
- Anti-Drone Measures: With the potential for aerial threats, an anti-drone system will be implemented to neutralize any unauthorized drone activities. Additionally, bulletproof outposts will be stationed at critical points to enhance security.
Holding Areas for Crowd Management
In light of the anticipated surge in pilgrims, holding areas will be established at the borders of neighboring districts. This initiative aims to manage the flow of attendees into Prayagraj effectively, ensuring that traffic congestion is minimized and that the situation remains under control.
- Facilities in Holding Areas: These designated holding areas will be equipped with essential amenities, including electricity, water supply, restrooms, food services, and medical assistance. Sufficient police personnel will be deployed to maintain order and ensure safety within these zones.
- Traffic Management: Authorities are taking proactive steps to alleviate traffic pressure in the Mela area. Pilgrims will only be allowed entry into Prayagraj when conditions permit, facilitating a smoother and safer experience for everyone.
Community Safety Initiatives
Beyond the immediate security measures, the government is also focusing on community safety initiatives. Public awareness campaigns will educate pilgrims about safety protocols, emergency contacts, and how to report suspicious activities.
Local residents are encouraged to participate in creating a supportive and vigilant environment, further bolstering the overall security framework during the event.
Conclusion
As the Kumbh Mela approaches, the commitment of authorities to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims is evident. By implementing these comprehensive measures, including mandatory checks, advanced technological surveillance, and the establishment of holding areas, the government aims to facilitate a safe and orderly experience for the millions who will partake in this sacred event.
With the collaboration of multiple law enforcement agencies and the support of the local community, Prayagraj is poised to host a successful Kumbh Mela that honors its rich cultural heritage while prioritizing the safety of all participants.
