New Delhi: Actor Pankaj Tripathi has stood down as the Election Commission of India’s National Icon. He made the “voluntary” decision since he is playing late BJP leader and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the latter’s upcoming biography.
According to the Election Commission of India, he “voluntarily stepped down” from his position as a political leader in the upcoming film.

Actor Tripathi, who is well-known for his versatility, is playing the legendary politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party in his next film, Main Atal Hoon.
In an old interview, Pankaj Tripathi stated that he was a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in college.
“I never considered entering politics at the time,” the actor remarked. I considered continuing in this line, but then there was an arrest and the officers beat me up, so I abandoned that concept. At the same time, I grew interested in plays and dramas, and after viewing them, I became even more interested in theatre.”
On January 19, Main Atal Hoon will be released.
Tripathi recently stated that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a legend and that he was honored to tell the world about his inspirational narrative.
Pankaj Tripathi’s performance in Newton earned him a National Film Award – Special Mention. He received a National Film Award nomination for his performance in Mimi (2021).
