Madhya Pradesh is one of five states holding Assembly elections this year, preparing for the final significant poll before the 2024 presidential election.
Additionally, elections will be place in Mizoram, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. Madhya Pradesh is governed by the BJP, while Telangana is governed by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). In Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the Congress is in charge, while the Mizo National Front is in charge of the northeastern state.
After 22 MPs resigned, the Congress won the Madhya Pradesh elections in 2018, but the BJP took over in March 2020.
In this state, where Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the leader of the government, the BJP has been in power since 2003 (except from the 18 months between 2018 and 2020). One of the larger states to send 29 representatives to the Lok Sabha is Madhya Pradesh.
The approaching assembly elections will not only define the political landscape at the state level but are also likely to have consequences at the national level given that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are only a few months away. High-stakes confrontations are anticipated in a number of areas, thus political parties have been aggressively preparing for these elections.
