The Congress Party criticized Amit Shah’s statement on addressing the Manipur issue in Parliament as a “desperate bid to manage headlines.”
The Congress Party stated on Monday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement indicating the government’s willingness to examine the Manipur issue in Parliament was a “desperate bid to manage headlines,” adding that the top BJP leader is not “doing anybody special favor.” According to Congress general-secretary Jairam Ramesh, the opposition’s demand is for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a statement on the ethnic conflicts in Manipur, followed by a discussion.
In the face of opposition MPs shouting for a statement from PM Modi, Shah declared that the government is prepared to talk about what happened in Manipur.
“I urge all respected opposition members that on a very sensitive issue, many members have demanded a discussion between the ruling party and the opposition, and I am ready for the discussion.” “I don’t understand why the opposition refuses to allow debate,” Shah stated in Lok Sabha.
“I request that the opposition leader allow the discussion to take place, and that this truth be known to the entire country; it is critical,” he continued.
While Shah was speaking, some MPs from the opposition benches continued to yell slogans from their seats while holding placards with the words “INDIA stands with the Manipur people” inscribed on them up in the House.
More than two months of official silence on the ethnic clashes in the northeastern state were broken last week by Prime Minister Modi, who told reporters that mob attacks on two women who were displayed naked were unacceptable. The prime minister implied that there would be more violence, but he also promised to take harsh measures against those who were accused.
Throughout the current Monsoon session, both houses of Parliament have been routinely interrupted as the opposition prevented business by demanding a statement from Modi.
Ramesh tweeted following Shah’s comments in the Lok Sabha, “In a desperate bid to manage headlines, the Home Minister today said that the Modi govt is ready for a discussion on Manipur in Parliament.”
“He is not doing anyone any favors.” The INDIA parties’ absolutely democratic and legitimate demand is for the Prime Minister to make a statement on the Manipur crisis FIRST, followed by a discussion.”
“HM is completely silent on this.” “What is the hesitation in getting the Prime Minister to speak INSIDE Parliament first?” he inquired.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president, tweeted that it was Modi’s “duty to make a comprehensive statement inside Parliament on Manipur violence.”
Manipur viral video
National anger was caused by a video revealing sexual assaults on Kuki-Zomi women in Manipur. A large group of teenage men were seen around two naked women in the video, groping their genitalia before dragging them to a field. The Manipur police have come under fire for their slow response time following the initial complaint in the case being filed on May 18 and for failing to make any arrests even after the FIR was transferred to the closest police station on June 21. On Thursday, 77 days after the assault and one day after the viral video of it, the first arrest was made.
