On Wednesday, a video showing two women being attacked and gangraped after being paraded naked by a mob two months prior in Manipur was widely shared on social media. Mid-level police personnel acknowledged the incident and stated that it occurred on May 4 despite no senior police officers commenting on the video. According to the FIR that HT saw, the crowd, which numbered anywhere between 800-1000, also killed two of the women’s family members.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) released a press release on Wednesday evening as the horrifying assault video was going viral. In it, they denounced the incident and asked the National Commission for Women and National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to take notice of it. The ITLF members claimed that during the first few days of the unrest in Manipur, numerous events of this nature had taken place. If there were other such occurrences, HT would not be able to confirm them right away.
