New Delhi, June 6, 2025 — In a significant development for lakhs of medical aspirants, the Supreme Court of India has granted permission to the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to conduct the NEET PG 2025 examination on August 3, 2025. The apex court’s decision comes after the NBE sought an extension from the original exam date due to logistical challenges posed by the single-shift mandate.
A two-judge bench comprising Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Augustine George Masih passed the order, allowing the NBE to proceed with the new schedule. The court made it clear, however, that no further extensions will be granted to the NBE for the conduct of this examination.
The NEET PG (Postgraduate) examination was earlier scheduled to be held on June 15, 2025, but the Supreme Court, in an earlier order dated May 30, 2025, had directed that the exam must be conducted in a single shift only, to ensure uniformity and avoid discrepancies.

Following this, the NBE filed an application before the court requesting additional time to reorganize the examination logistics. The board cited the need to overhaul its existing arrangements and accommodate the new single-shift order, which required large-scale infrastructural and administrative adjustments.
Taking the constraints into consideration, the Supreme Court accepted the revised timeline, but issued a strict warning that no more time extensions will be entertained. The court emphasized the importance of sticking to the schedule and maintaining transparency and fairness in the examination process.
Background
The NEET PG examination is a national-level entrance test conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for admission to postgraduate medical courses across India. Every year, lakhs of MBBS graduates appear for the test to secure seats in MD/MS/Diploma programs in various medical institutions.
This year’s NEET PG has been a subject of legal and administrative scrutiny after concerns were raised about the multi-shift system. The Supreme Court’s decision to enforce a single-shift format aims to eliminate variations in difficulty levels and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.

What This Means for Candidates
Candidates preparing for NEET PG 2025 now have clarity on the examination date. The NBE is expected to release a revised information bulletin, including updated timelines for admit card issuance, mock test schedules, and other important instructions in the coming weeks.
Medical aspirants are advised to keep an eye on the official NBE website (www.natboard.edu.in) for further announcements.
