New Delhi, India
US Vice President JD Vance has strongly condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead and several others injured, calling on Pakistan to cooperate with India in tracking down the terrorists responsible. In a significant statement on Thursday, Mr. Vance emphasized the need for justice while urging both nations to avoid escalating regional tensions.
“Our hope here is that India responds to this terrorist attack in a way that doesn’t lead to a broader regional conflict. And we hope, frankly, that Pakistan — to the extent that they’re responsible — cooperates with India to make sure that the terrorists sometimes operating in their territory are hunted down and dealt with,” Mr. Vance said during a podcast interview with Fox News.
JD Vance was on a India tour with his family when the deadly attack took place.

Tragic Attack in the Valley
The attack took place last week in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, a scenic region often referred to as “Mini Switzerland” due to its picturesque landscape. Multiple terrorists descended on the tourist hotspot and indiscriminately opened fire on civilians. Among the 26 victims was one Nepali national. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and horror as gunfire erupted, leaving tourists scrambling for cover in the open meadow with little protection.
The assailants vanished into the dense forested terrain, prompting large-scale search operations by Indian security forces to locate and neutralize them. The attack is being termed one of the deadliest in the region since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

US Expresses Solidarity
JD Vance, who was on a private tour of India with his family when the attack occurred, personally reached out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month. According to Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the US Vice President expressed deep condolences and assured India’s leadership that the United States stands firmly with the people of India in the fight against terrorism.
“Usha and I extend our condolences to the victims of the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. Over the past few days, we have been overcome with the beauty of this country and its people. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this horrific attack,” Mr. Vance also wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Other top US leaders, including President Donald Trump, have echoed this sentiment, condemning the violence as “terror” and “unconscionable,” though avoiding direct attribution of blame to Pakistan.
India’s Response
In the aftermath of the attack, India has taken strong diplomatic and strategic actions. The government has indefinitely suspended the Indus Waters Treaty — a water-sharing agreement with Pakistan that dates back decades — and has ordered the expulsion of all Pakistani nationals from Indian soil. These measures underline India’s growing impatience with cross-border terrorism and demand for accountability from Islamabad.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has also enhanced deployment of security forces in sensitive areas of Jammu and Kashmir and ordered an increase in intelligence-sharing mechanisms among security agencies.
Call for Accountability
While Pakistan has not officially responded to JD Vance’s comments, New Delhi continues to assert that elements within Pakistan provide safe havens and logistical support to terror groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
Foreign policy experts say the US Vice President’s direct call for Pakistan to take responsibility — even conditionally — marks a notable shift in Washington’s rhetoric, which often seeks to balance relations between the two South Asian rivals.
As investigations and military operations continue, families of the victims and the nation at large demand justice, accountability, and lasting peace in the region.
The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam is a stark reminder of the persistent threat of terrorism in the region. It is commendable that JD Vance expressed his condolences and solidarity with India during this tragic time. The swift response by Indian security forces highlights their determination to combat such acts of violence. Cooperation between India and Pakistan is crucial to addressing the root causes of these attacks. What steps can be taken to ensure long-term peace and security in the region?
This attack in Pahalgam is truly heartbreaking and highlights the persistent threat of terrorism in the region. It’s encouraging to see international figures like JD Vance express solidarity with India, but I wonder if such statements translate into actionable support. The description of the chaos and the loss of innocent lives is deeply unsettling, and it’s hard to imagine the fear those tourists must have felt. Do you think Pakistan will genuinely cooperate in addressing the root causes of such attacks, or is this just diplomatic rhetoric? The beauty of the region contrasts so starkly with the horror of the event—how can such a place ever recover its sense of safety? What more can the international community do to ensure these attacks don’t escalate into broader conflicts?
