Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kirti Azad has strongly supported West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s bid to lead the opposition alliance, INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance). Azad emphasized that Mamata is the most suitable candidate for the leadership role, as she is the only leader who has consistently defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly in West Bengal, where she has repeatedly outsmarted the BJP in elections.

This statement comes after Mamata Banerjee expressed her desire to lead the INDIA alliance, a coalition of opposition parties aiming to challenge the BJP in the upcoming national elections. Her desire to take the helm of the alliance has been supported by several senior leaders, including Sharad Pawar, the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Pawar described Banerjee as a capable leader and backed her aspiration to lead the opposition coalition.

Support from Sharad Pawar

Banerjee’s remarks about her willingness to lead the opposition alliance were made in a recent interview with a news channel, where she expressed dissatisfaction with the current functioning of the alliance. She hinted that, if given the opportunity, she would be ready to take charge of the coalition.

In response, Kirti Azad highlighted that there is growing discussion within the INDIA alliance regarding the need for leadership change. He pointed out that senior leaders, including Sharad Pawar, have also advocated for Mamata Banerjee to be appointed as the leader of the alliance. Azad argued that Mamata is the only leader with a proven track record of defeating the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, especially in recent elections in Bengal, where the BJP was decisively beaten.

Experience and Leadership

Azad further noted that Mamata Banerjee has significant experience in national and state politics. She has been a Member of Parliament, a former Union Minister, and the Chief Minister of West Bengal since 2011. Her leadership, Azad believes, would provide the opposition with the strength and experience needed to challenge the BJP in the coming elections.

Mamata Banerjee’s comments about taking over the leadership of the INDIA alliance have also been acknowledged by Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), another constituent of the opposition coalition. Yadav stated that while there is no objection to Mamata leading the alliance, it is important for all senior leaders in the alliance to sit together and make a collective decision on leadership.

A Growing Consensus for Mamata’s Leadership

In the latest developments, leaders across the opposition camp are converging on the idea that a leadership change in the INDIA alliance is necessary. Azad concluded by emphasizing that now is the time to appoint Mamata Banerjee as the leader of the alliance, given her extensive experience and proven political acumen.

With her clear track record of winning elections and challenging the BJP’s dominance, Mamata Banerjee’s leadership of the INDIA alliance could be a pivotal moment for the opposition as they gear up for the upcoming electoral battles.
