Following an outcry over the delay in action in the case, a Delhi government official accused of regularly raping a friend’s 16-year-old daughter was detained for questioning on Monday, along with his wife, who allegedly supplied the teenager abortion pills.
After bringing the girl home after her father’s passing, the official is accused of sexually assaulting her from October 2020 until February 2021. This month, a psychiatrist at a Delhi hospital who had been counseling the girl disclosed the sexual abuse to the authorities.
After ordering the official’s suspension, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered the couple to be detained as calls for the latter’s arrest increased. According to a spokesperson for the Delhi administration, Kejriwal has requested that Naresh Kumar, the city’s chief secretary, give a report on the situation by Monday at 5 p.m.
Saurabh Bharadwaj, a Delhi minister, said the horrifying occurrence had brought shame to humanity. He mentioned the action’s delay and stated that Kejriwal was prompted to step in and order the officer’s suspension as a result. Bharadwaj assured the girl he would help her in every way he could.
Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women, previously stated that she would notify the police about the holdup in action and that the suspect needed to be taken into custody quickly. In addition to the Indian Penal Code sections relating to criminal intimidation, conspiracy, inducing a miscarriage without consent, etc., the accused, a deputy director in the women and child development department (WCD), was charged under the strict Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which calls for an immediate arrest.
The arrest was postponed, according to deputy police commissioner Sagar Singh Kalsi, since the girl’s testimony before a magistrate could not be recorded. “The child is still experiencing stress and trauma. She is being watched. The probe is still ongoing.
The youngster was receiving therapy after having an anxiety episode, according to a second police officer who did not want to be named. The doctors who were treating her, he said, had advised that she remain under surveillance for 14 days.
Over 25 years ago, the official began working for the Delhi government as a welfare officer. Additionally, he has held the position of superintendent of the young Justice Board, which is in charge of managing young offenders’ rehabilitation.
The accused describes himself as an officer on special duty (OSD) to the WCD minister on his social media profiles. However, the administration made it clear that he was a deputy director in the department and not an OSD.
According to a spokeswoman for the Delhi government, the law should be followed since the first information report has been filed in the case. The Delhi administration is sensitive to such important issues as the safety of women and child abuse.The harshest punishment should be applied to him if he has committed any such despicable conduct.
