A top Iranian general said his country may review its nuclear policies if Israel threatens to attack its nuclear sites, suggesting that Tehran may rush to develop a nuclear weapon as rhetoric intensified in the wake of Israel’s April 13 drone and missile attack.

Ahmad Haghtalab, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, did not detail the change, but Tehran has always maintained that its nuclear program, which has sparked worry in the United States, Israel, and the United Nations, is only for peaceful purposes. Haghtalab also stated that such an attack would result in a retaliatory attack on Israel’s nuclear facilities.

“It’s possible and conceivable to revise the Islamic Republic of Iran’s nuclear doctrine and policies and deviate from the considerations of previous declarations” if Israel uses the threat of an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities to put pressure on Tehran, he said,

The remarks fueled tensions that the US and its allies have been attempting to defuse in the days since Iran created a barrage of 300 drones and missiles at Israel in response to a strike in Syria that killed three Iranian commanders on April 1. Israel, the US, and the UK shot down almost all of the incoming weapons, however Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top Israeli officials have stated
